ABOUT THE FILM Synopsis "Dads" invites the viewer to observe a family in the midst of unidentified, pivotal patriarchal life troubles. The film illustrates the manner in which the father faces his demons, and comes to realize that he might not be the only one on the block. Production Points Running time: 5 minutes 10 seconds Format: PAL VHS/DV 4:3 Aspect All 3d work was completed using Softimage|3D v3.8SP2, with post processing done in Adobe AfterFX, Photoshop and Eyeon Digital Fusion. Sound and music were edited using CoolEdit, and mixed in Adobe Premiere. Notion to Completion was around 18 months (for good reasons of a hefty amount of concurrent study). It was done for my final year project (not entirely under duress), but spilled over the year, before and after. The degree got me a 1st Class Honours BSc and I was very pleased with that. I've never employed the story boarding process as much as I did with this project. Over three months were spend on finalising the storyboards, making sure it read correctly and flowed nicely. Not confusing the reader/viewer was number one, and so many many many changes to the order, structure and characters were made, with several 'final drafts'. Quite frustrating at times - e.g. I knew what what was going on by shot 18, but no one else did. The original music track used in the film is called 'Small Children in the Background', and is by Mogwai, used with kind permission. The film was edited on a Sony ES7 station directly onto MiniDV tape. For a project focussing on the narrative, the structure leaves elements open to discussion (why has he locked himself away being the immediate one), and it's interesting to see what people make of it. There's been many different interpretations, and some very interesting and rational ones I'd never thought of myself. Luckily, the message seems to get through at least 95% of the time.
